Birdland was one of several original tract names inside what officially became Serra Mesa in June 1961, when the Cabrillo Mission Community Council held a contest to name the newly built community. Most of Birdland’s homes went up in the same wave of tract construction as the rest of Serra Mesa, built between the late 1950s and early 1960s in the years following the Navy’s post-Korean War Cabrillo Heights housing project.
